Senator Joel Villanueva on Tuesday raised alarm over the huge potential of spreading the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) because there are several Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) workers working in an enclosed area and are residing in high rise condominiums.
Villanueva said the Department of Finance (DOF) should have a clear framework on what sector to allow to operate.
He said the possibility that the POGO will spread the disease should also be considered by the government, and not just because of income contribution to the government.
He likewise considered POGO a high risk sector aside from the fact that most of them also do not pay taxes.
“So what’s the rationale for allowing them to operate? ” asked the chair of the Senate labor committee.
Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto said he is amenable to the resumption of its operation if it is work from home.
Sought for his comment if it’s not work from home, Recto replied, “It’s non-essential. I would rather allow construction workers and farmers to go back to work.”/Stacy Ang
