For playing Hollywood icon Judy Garland, American actress Renee Zellweger was voted Best Actress in the recently concluded 92nd Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles California. Meanwhile, Joaquin Phoenix did not let critics down when he bagged the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Batman’s perennial nemesis, “Joker.”
Zellweger’s movie “Judy” ( “Judy Over the Rainbow”) is a 2019 biographical drama film about American singer and actress Judy Garland. Under the direction of Rupert Goold, it is a widescreen adaptation of the Olivier and Tony-nominated West end and Broadway play ” End of the Rainbow” penned by Peter Quilter.
This is the second Oscar for Zellweger, commonly known for her portrayals of vulnerable women. She bested a field that included such fine actresses and veterans like Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”), Scarlett Johansson (“Marriage Story”), Saoirse Ronan (“Little Women”) and Charlize Theron (“Bombshell”).
Phoenix meanwhile got the Oscars for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck, the man behind the criminal Joker, Batman’s arch enemy. This award caps Phoenix’s best year, since he also got a Golden Globes for his memorable performance in the film.
